Social Media has definitely changed the world in more ways than one. It is often said that when used strategically over time, it is the most powerful form of marketing the world has ever seen.

In the time of Covid-19, we see the magnitude of its role, and how it has been helping businesses -small or big- during these unprecedented times. Social media can also affect how we choose good investment properties.

Keeping that in mind, with all things in this world, take what you see with a grain of salt. With so many people that are online now and that want instant fame and success, it is no doubt that there would be a lot of them pretending in the social media world. And it is no surprise that even property investment advisors are amongst them.

In this day and age, we see a lot of these self-proclaimed millionaires, successful property investment advisors or real estate investments gurus on Instagram and on Facebook flaunting their exotic cars, their business class travels, their luxurious holiday trips, their big yachts, etc. But newsflash -a lot of that is fake and is not real.

We see them post these things online to lure vulnerable people into thinking that whatever programs or life hacks that they will impart on you, through purchasing their e-books or their self-made online programs, will make you rich and successful like they are. It is a means for them to entice the consumer to believe that since they have all these luxuries and success, they know what they are doing and/or that they are the best in what they do. And therefore, if you follow their path and advice, you will end up just like them.

Seeing these people with all their cars, their yachts, their 5-star hotels, etc., consumers start to feel more inferior and/or be more envious of those people they see on social media. And then it all becomes too much for them.

One of the things that social media has affected us negatively is with our mental health. Alfred Adler said, “to be human is to have inferior feelings”, and in the era of social media, this is potentially heightened and amplified. We can clearly see a distinct link between social media with increased mental health risks like increased anxiety and depressive symptoms, but one of the most powerful ones is increased social comparison.

What is social comparison?

As described by Leon Festinger, “Social comparison is a form of sociological self-esteem, where we derive our sense of self through comparing ourselves with others. He also argued that people have a tendency to make downward social comparisons with those who are worse off or less skilled than them, and this can raise their self-esteem. Conversely, upward social comparisons can reduce self-esteem, and are more likely with social media.” And sadly, this is exactly what is currently happening.

For those of you who may have felt strongly like they will not be able to achieve all these “successful” things, you have to start asking yourselves: Why not you? What can’t you be like that person who has that car, who is able to go on to these expensive holidays and stay in all these expensive hotels?

Why not You?

One of the things I always tell family and friends is to “Stay in your lane.” We have way too many distractions in this world. And now that there is social media, it is so much easier and faster for people to share things. And in doing so, it has become relatively easier for other people to get sidetracked with their own life.

Currently, people spend an average of 2 hours and 23 minutes per day on social media. That is a steady increase from 1 hour and 30 minutes in 2012. Majority of the world’s population say that they are constantly connected online. And that is understandable.

As more and more people and businesses start to integrate themselves online, it is only a matter of time before everything in this world goes digital. But be as that may be, I still stand firm to staying in your lane, to staying on your own path.

Everyone is different. No person in this world goes through the same thing, the same instances. There may be certain parallelism in life but if you look at them closely, it is very much still different. And the choices a person has to make will always make every path different from one another. There is no overnight success .

Because of social media, we have heard the term “overnight fame” on a regular basis. Indeed, it has become easier to find fame especially in this digital age of the internet. But what you should always keep in mind is that being famous does not necessarily equate to being successful. So, the age old adage still applies, fame is fickle. And most specially in business, there really is no quick way to build that wealth.

It takes time and a lot of learning in building your property investment portfolio. And a lot of proper investment property advisers would tell you that.
